The new production, “Disney On Ice presents Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey,” aims to take audiences on a sightseeing tour of the imagination. Joining the beloved mice on their trip will be Donald Duck and Goofy, who have packed their bags for a ride into the magical worlds inhabited by friends Lilo and Stitch, who hula in Hawaii; Simba and Nala, who explore the African Pride Lands; Ariel and Sebastian, who experience an aquatic adventure in their undersea kingdom; and Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, who soar through the starry skies.

The production, which draws inspiration from Disney films including “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Peter Pan” and “Lilo & Stitch,” features an international team of award-winning figure skaters, high-energy choreography and a colorful set.

How many ways are there that Mickey Mouse can be monetized? Apparently the boffins at Disney have yet to exhaust all avenues, as evident by this new Transformer toy from Japan that features Mickey Mouse in a robotic form factor. As usual, with Mickey being the de facto leader of the pack from Disney, he will take over the role of Optimus Prime, great leader of the Autobots in the classic Transformers cartoon. On display at the Tokyo Toy Forum 2009, the Transformers Mickey Mouse will definitely cause parents to scratch their heads, wondering why can’t toy companies leave their kids alone so that they won’t have to spend so much money to keep the little ones happy. I remember when I asked for some toys during my younger days, my parents either booted me out of the home to spend the day outdoors with my imagination or throw me a paper and some color pencils. If you’re adamant on getting your hands on this toy, look out for it this February as it retails for $38.57 a pop

The first official sequel to the original Winnie-the-Pooh books will come out in October, its publishing company* said on Saturday, more than eighty years after the honey-loving bear first seemed in print.

“Return to the Hundred Acre Wood” is the follow up to A.A. Milne’s “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The House At Pooh Corner”, which were famously illustrated by E.H. Shepard.

The new book, published by Egmont publication in Britain and Pengiun imprint Dutton Children’s Books in the United States, will be written by David Benedictus, who produced an audio adaptation of Winnie-the-Pooh starring actress Judi Dench.

Mark Burgess, who has already drawn classic children’s characters including Paddington Bear and Winnie-the-Pooh, is to provide the illustrations. Return to the Hundred Acre Wood will hit the shelves on Oct. 5.

“We have been hoping for a good many years that we might one day be able to offer the world a sequel which would do justice to the original Winnie-the-Pooh stories,” said Michael Brown on behalf of the trustees of Pooh Properties, which manages the affairs of the Milne and Shepard estates.

“The original books were one of the greatest celebrations of childhood in any language, but we believe that David Benedictus and Mark Burgess have captured the spirit and quality of those original books.”

The story of Winnie-the-Pooh and the original illustrations are still popular today.

A collection of Shepard’s drawings for the Pooh books fetched around $2 million at auction in London last month. (Reporting by Mike Collett-White, editing by Paul Casciato) (To read more about our entertainment news, visit our blog “Fan Fare” online at http://blogs.reuters.com/fanfare)

2009 will see the return of one of the world’s best-loved fictional characters, Winnie the Pooh. The loveable bear was created by British writer A.A. Milne and first appeared in a book in 1926. Milne only wrote two novels about Pooh’s adventures, the last being ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ in 1928. Eighty years later, those in charge of the Pooh name allowed the publication of a sequel. The third book will be called ‘Return to the Hundred Acre Wood’. It will hit bookstore shelves on October the 5th and should be an instant bestseller. Many people predict it will be the biggest seller of the year. The Pooh books have been translated into 50 languages. In 1966, the Walt Disney company started making movies about Pooh and turned the character into a household name.

Batman Flash Game

Batman/Bruce Wayne

Under the cape and cowl can be found a younger Bruce Wayne in his 20s. The media is more likely to catch him courtside at a Gotham Gators game or strapping on a helmet to drive his own racecar for a charity than in front of City Hall cutting a ribbon. But don’t confuse the swinging bachelor persona for the real Bruce – he’s intense, driven and completely focused on his life’s mission to serve as the Dark Knight. Aided by technology he’s secretly developed – including the operating system known as the Bat-Wave – and driven by the childhood memory of the loss of his parents, Batman takes to the streets in order to bring Gotham’s new breed of super villains to justice.

Robin/Dick Grayson

After the tragic loss of Dick’s parents, Bruce Wayne took young Dick under his wing. To bring justice to the criminal’s responsible for his parent’s death; Dick joined The Batman’s side as Robin. A young but highly skilled and energetic acrobat, Robin has become an asset to the fight along side The Batman and Batgirl.

Batgirl/Barbara Gordon

Batgirl – known as Barbara Gordon – the teenage daughter of Gotham’s Commissioner Gordon, is a strong-willed, stubborn teen with an ironic wit. Inspired by her first contact with The Batman, she dons the cape and cowl to become Batgirl to help save her father from the hands of former friend and now villain – Poison Ivy.

Alfred Pennyworth

Within the confines of his role as butler to the Wayne estate, Alfred raised Bruce and, on occasion, continues to provide him with veiled wisdom. The cape and cowl are new enough that Alfred is still growing accustomed to them. Thus, we witness his genuine concern for Bruce’s safety when Bruce goes up against the likes of Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze and the will of the Rogues Gallery.

Commissioner James Gordon

The new Commissioner Jim Gordon believes that The Batman is truly a force for good in Gotham City. Unlike Chief Rojas when The Batman is needed, Gordon will gladly allow The Batman to apprehend criminals that are considered highly dangerous and extremely difficult to apprehend.

So much for the idea that Disney is the happiest place on Earth.

The family-entertainment giant stumbled badly in its latest quarter. Revenue fell by 8% to $9.6 billion during the first quarter, weighed down by sluggish television advertising, slower turnstile clicks at its theme parks, and a tough slate of DVD releases relative to last year’s winners.

Earnings fell by 35% to $0.41 a share before an investment sale gain. Analysts were expecting a profit of $0.51 a share on $10.1 billion in revenue. It’s the second quarter in a row that Disney has come up short, and that’s after blowing past Wall Street’s bottom-line targets consistently during the early part of CEO Bob Iger’s tenure.

The media titan’s strongholds proved weak, with declines in media networks (5%), parks and resorts (4%), and studio (26%). Operating margins deteriorated in all three areas. The company scored gains in consumer products as the result of its Disney Store acquisition from Children’s Place (Nasdaq: PLCE) along with a healthy 13% jump in interactive media, but those two subsidiaries make up less than 10% of the revenue.

Everyone knows that the economy is in a funk, and that means that even zealous Jonas Brothers fans are taking a breather.

Disney can’t afford to be off. It’s not like fellow park operators Cedar Fair (NYSE: FUN) and Six Flags (NYSE: SIX), which hibernate during the fall and winter and have a long-shot crack at sleeping through the malaise if the economy bounces back this summer. Disney’s wheels are always turning.

It doesn’t help that Disney is now two years removed from its most recent Pirates of the Caribbean flick. One can argue that Miley Cyrus and High School Musical have also run their course.

Getting pumped about the current quarter is tough, too. Beyond the advertising headwinds and escalating cable programming costs that also smacks around rivals such as Viacom (NYSE: VIA), CBS (NYSE: CBS), and News Corp. (NYSE: NWS), investors need to brace themselves for a dud at the theme-park level, too. Disney isn’t alone in pushing out some massive discounts, including its free birthday admission and the “buy four nights, get three nights free” promotion. The calendar is going to betray the company.

Disney suffered a $40 million shift in operating profits when Easter went from being a fiscal third-quarter event to a second-quarter holiday break. Easter falls in April this year, so the quarter that ends in March is going to have an even harder act to follow.

The family-entertainment powerhouse has weathered financial downturns over the decades. It will bounce back this time, too. For Disney’s sake, let’s just hope it happens sometime before High School Musical 27 — or when the Jonas Brothers are renamed the Jonas Grandfathers.

These days the 30-year-old skater is bringing Disney to children all over the world, including the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon, which presents “Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic” for seven shows Thursday through Sunday.

“I love it,” Alegre said. “I can’t tell you how lucky I am.”

The show combines Disney’s unforgettable stories with enthralling characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, Stitch, Buzz Lightyear and Woody, Nemo and the Incredibles. There’ll also be moments showcased from Disney’s “Mulan” and “The Lion King.”

Alegre skates in the roles of Gaston, Belle’s prince from “Beauty and the Beast,” and Simba from “The Lion King.”

Mickey and Minnie serve as hosts for the show, which features choreography by Emmy Award-winner Sarah Kawahara, elaborate sets created by scenic designer David Potts and lighting designer LeRoy Bennett and beautiful costumes outfitted by costume designer Scott Lane. Renowned designer Bob Mackie lends his talents to a red sequined evening gown worn by Minnie Mouse.

Then there’s the incredible sing-along music Disney is known for such as “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Under the Sea” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”

“‘Disney On Ice’ is one of the biggest events to come to the Resch Center each year and is certainly one of the real crowd pleasers,” said Terry Charles of PMI Entertainment Group. “People look forward to it every February.”

Alegre strapped on his first skates at age 3. His mother, who now lives in Florida, is a skating coach.

“Since we were born, we were pretty much at the rink with her, and she was taking care of us,” said Alegre, who later competed in singles competitions in Spain before coming to the United States where he began competing in pairs.

He eventually tired of competing and has been with Disney for three years and with this particular show four or five months. He spoke to us by telephone from Ontario where the troupe was performing.

Q: You play two characters in the production. Is that a challenge?

A: It’s something I enjoy doing. … One character is a prince so it’s pretty skating — long lines and more classical style. And the other one is more acrobatic. You are doing the character of a lion. It’s different movements, all kinds of different stuff.

I enjoy both of them a lot because it’s a different challenge. One of them you can do more tricks, more acrobatic things, and the other is more beautiful, clean skating, which I enjoy, too. They’re hard numbers, so it’s good for me.

Q: On your bio, you list Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal as your role model. Why?

A: I admire him a lot. … He’s an amazing tennis player, but he’s an extremely hard worker, very strong physically and mentally, and he’s very respectful to the other players. He’s No. 1 in the world right now. He’s the best tennis player ever since Roger Federer. He’s very humble and I admire that. … He’s a great role model for anyone.

Disney coloring pages will not only enhance your child’s artistic and creative potential by presenting them with a plain surface to showcase their talents in the way they want, but will also develop their physical and cognitive capacity simultaneously. They will be better equipped with information and knowledge than their peers, and will also be able to display greater finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination, and other such finer motor skills as compared to their friends.

Children who use Disney coloring pages on a regular basis will flourish not only as artists, but will also be set with better concentration, determination towards completing a given task, and various other cognitive standards. You will see your child rise and shine above the others of his age, and probably be astonished at what these coloring pages can actually do to improve and hone your child’s talents. This has been proved many a time; so do not take this casually.

Disney coloring pages offer children with an opportunity to gain a sense of achievement and pride in themselves, something that they ought to achieve at their age, for otherwise it is possible that they remain a little subdued and less confident in their endeavors later in life. Receiving the sense of satisfaction and appreciation is very important for kids at this age.

Above all, though, the most important advantage of these Disney coloring pages is that you can acquire any number of them from the internet, at a moment’s notice, provided you have a computer, printer and an internet connection, and right at home. Disney coloring pages would be a wonderful activity for birthday parties and dress-ups related to the themes, too. And all this is absolutely free of cost. Then why deny your kids this great pleasure? Why not go ahead and get a few prints of these lovely and extremely useful Disney coloring pages right away?

Tickle Me Elmo is a kids toy from Tyco, brought out in the U.S.A. in 1996, becoming that year’s top fad. Brightly red in color and based on Elmo, a Muppet persona from Sesame Street, when pressured, Elmo would chortle. When pressured three times in a row, Elmo would begin to shake and laugh hysterically.

In 1996, the Tickle Me Elmo was the “must have” toy. Many parents literally fought other parents in North American toy stores to purchase one of the toys for Christmas. The short supply of the toy, due to unexpected demand, meant that stores hiked the price on the dolls drastically. Newspaper classifieds even sold the plush toy for hundreds of U.S. dollars. People reports that the US $28.99 toy fetched as much as $1500.

On January 9, 2002, select Elmos will stop chortling and announce to five people that they are winners of a big-money sweepstakes competition.

The grand prize winner will receive a $200,000 check toward the purchase of a new house, $60,000 in savings bonds for their child’s education, a Volkswagen Beetle, a new PC and a ride-on battery-operated VW car for the child.

All the prizes are decorated in an Elmo theme, including the Beetle.

The four runners-up will receive a VW beetle, $40,000 in education bonds, a PC, and the ride-on toy.

Three weeks after Christmas, the Tickle Me Elmo “Surprise” edition will simply announce “Congratulations!” to the winner of the grand prize when he is picked up and played with. He will say “You found it!” to the runners-up.

Peter Van der Linden, a Silicon Valley software consultant behind a Hack Furby challenge, said the contest was just a clever marketing scheme.

“Christmas is traditionally a time of greed and this toy speaks directly to that tradition,” Van der Linden said. “It subtly manipulates the parents to provide a toy for their child in the hope of some later benefit for them. It’s clever.”

Van der Linden succeeded in hacking Furby and transformed one of the dolls into a clock that wiggles on the hour. Elmo, on the other hand, is not interesting to him.

“It doesn’t have a rich enough array of behavior,” he said. “Furby was an interesting toy because there was so much going on inside it. Tickle Me Elmo is almost inert — it’s lobotomized.”

“You press it, it giggles. Where’s the fun in that?” he added.

A few years ago, mischievous programmers switched the voice boxes of G.I. Joe and Let’s Go Shopping Barbie and replaced them on store shelves, he said.

Tickle Me Elmo, based on the beloved Sesame Street muppet, rocketed to toy stardom when the original doll debuted in 1996.

The stuffed monster giggles infectiously when his stomach is pressed, and he urges his playmate to “Tickle Elmo again.”

“We decided we wanted to bring him back on the fifth anniversary with something really special,” said Fisher-Price president Neil Friedman. “We wanted him to be able to be more than he was the first time.”

For those who don’t win a prize, Elmo will instead introduce new play patterns on Jan. 9.

Friedman declined to say what those play patterns will be.

“Besides all the things that Elmo does, he’ll do something new,” he said.

Friedman also refused to say anything at all about the technology behind the new doll, except to say he is confident it can’t be hacked.

“The way we’ve programmed him, they won’t be able to do it,” he stated. “We have a couple safeguards that will make it impossible for them.”

Even if someone managed to hack the doll, they would not be able to claim the prize, he said.

“We’d know because we have an embedded number that will tell us that this doll is, in fact, the true Tickle Me Elmo winner,” he said.

Van der Linden suggested one potential hack: Open up the crystal-powered clock inside Elmo and replace it with one that runs twice as fast to see if it’s a prize-winning monster.

Van der Linden wondered what the new Elmo behaviors will be after January 9.

“You can bet he won’t taunt the losers,” he said, “like ‘You’re a loser! Buy me again!’”

Elmo must have his batteries in to announce the prize. If a kid forgets to play with Elmo on January 9, she can still win if she has the winning doll: Elmo will repeat the winning words any time after January 9.

Toy experts said the sweepstakes was a novel spin on an old marketing idea.

In the Disney animation The Tale of Despereaux, the hero is banished from Mouseworld because of his refusal to cower. As the plot thickens, Despereaux is forced to traverse a ledge strewn with deadly mousetraps in order to escape the dreary Ratworld, rescue the fair princess, and resurrect the kingdom.

Despereaux is Barak Obama, right down to the adorable ears.

The heart of the 1992 Democratic Party surge was Al Gore’s exhortation at the Democratic Convention held that year in Madison Square Garden: “It’s time for them to go!” And if they went, the ticket promised to address the multiple “deficits” (jobs, health care, education, infrastructure) keeping hard-working Americans from their promised dream. Unfortunately, for those of us who wanted to see the Democratic Party become a progressive force, President Bill Clinton quickly shifted his focus to free trade and another deficit, the budget deficit.

The story I heard was that Bob Rubin had taken the then president-elect “to the woodshed.” “Balance the budget and the markets will purr,” counseled the economic whiz kid. And he did and they did.

Clinton’s achievements in his first two years–budget discipline and free trade–along with the colossal failure of Hillary’s baffling, corporatist health care plan, led directly to the Democratic debacle of 1994 in which the Republicans took the House for the first time in 46 years. Thereafter, Clinton and the Democrats became the vehicle for Dick Morris-style triangulation, bringing together Republicans and Blue Dogs to end welfare (as we knew it), outlaw gay marriage, and break down the six-decade firewall between commercial and investment banking.

Unlike Bill Clinton, Barack Obama comes to office with a mandate. In 1992, Clinton snuck in with 43% of the vote. Obama won by at least 8 million votes, too many for even Karl Rove and his stable of IT saboteurs to make vanish in cyberspace. Like Clinton, Obama has solid Democratic majorities to work with in both houses. Clinton squandered this advantage; Obama must not.

The Obama phenomenon far surpassed anything seen during the Clinton campaigns. Some of the excitement was, as in 1992, about getting rid of Republicans. “It’s time for them to go” became “We can’t afford four more years of George W. Bush!” But there was more to it.

Barack Obama assumes office in a time of unparalleled challenges for the country and the planet. For the first time in my lifetime (and I was born in the year Harry Truman was elected!), the very idea of the United States of America is in question. For what would this country be if it were no longer powerful, if not the most powerful nation on earth? And that possibility is looking us right in our collective eye.

When it became clear after the first couple of years that Bill Clinton was not going to move the country in a progressive direction (in fact, the Democratic Party crashed nationwide during the Clinton years), there was still the enormous smarts and great charm of the man; those, and a weak 1996 opponent, were enough to stake him to two terms. Despite dishonoring his office and despite the fact that many of the policies that we came to hate under George W. Bush actually began with him, Bill Clinton is still much loved by his party.

But love will not be enough for Barack Obama. He must produce. If Clinton faced deficits, Obama faces chasms. Military quagmires. A broken health care system. Public education in shambles. Unprecedented income inequality, and an economy on life-support.

If in two years Obama voters feel cheated, their high hopes unfulfilled, there will be hell to pay–for the Democrats, but more importantly, for the country.

But allow me to conclude by returning to Despereaux. The subtitle of the hero-mouse’s story, appearing on the screen in the film’s opening frames, is: “A Hero Doesn’t Appear Until the World Really Needs One.”

Well, we really do!

A spot of good book news among the desolate: 2009 will see the return of Winnie the Pooh. The estate of A.A. Milne has approved a sequel to the original Pooh books and A.P. Dutton Children’s Books, an imprint of Penguin Books, will publish “Return to the Hundred Acre Wood” on Oct. 5.

The Milne demesne had long been wanting to authorize a sequel, Pooh trustee Michael Brown told the pressing. But the right author and artist were needed. Author David Benedictus (who did two successful audio adaptations of the Pooh books) and artist Mark Burgess have “captured the spirit and quality of those original books,” said Brown.

Milne himself wrote only two Pooh books “Winnie-the-Pooh” (1926) and “The House at Pooh Corner” (1928). Each has been translated into more than 50 languages.

Disney bought the movie, television, and merchandise rights from the Milne estate in 1961, but most Pooh purists do not consider the Disney characters to be an extension of the true Pooh.

“We believe that David Benedictus and [illustrator] Mark Burgess have captured the spirit and quality of those original books,” Brown told the press. “We hope that the many millions of Pooh enthusiasts and readers around the world will embrace and cherish these new stories as if they had just emerged from the pen of A. A. Milne himself.”

Don Weisberg, president of Penguin Young Readers Group, told the Wall Street Journal that he anticipates the title to be a “huge seller for a long, long time.” The initial print run will be in excess of 100,000.
