first Mickey Mouse series created specifically for preschoolers, premieres in the U.S. during a special primetime presentation May 5 at 7:30 pm on Disney Channel and, in its regular timeslot, May 6 9:00 am during the learning-focused Playhouse Disney programming block. The half-hour series also premieres in a coordinated global launch, on 22 Disney Channels and five Playhouse Disney channels across North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Japan — reaching some 100 countries.

Produced by Walt Disney Television Animation, this first 3D computer-animated TV series starring Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Daisy Duck and Donald Duck features character designs referential to classic 1940s drawings. Overseas animation was done by DQ Studios in India.

In each episode of MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE, Mickey and his pals go on captivating capers in a fun-filled interactive world that blend humor, classic storytelling and lively music with early-learning fundamentals. The series is designed to introduce problem solving and early mathematics skills to preschoolers in a fun way. Mickey speaks directly to young viewers, asks questions and encourages them to play games, participate in special phrases or cheers, and to solve puzzles to reach a goal.

Storylines often feature a re-telling of a classic fairy tale such as Jack & the Beanstalk, starring Donald Duck, or Little Red Riding Hood starring Minnie Mouse. Recurring characters include Professor Von Drake, Clarabelle Cow, Chip & Dale and Mickey’s perennial nemesis, Pete the Cat.

Every episode, Mickey invites viewers to join him calling out the “magic” phrase, “Meeska, Mooska, Mickey Mouse!” which then causes the mouse-shaped structure that serves as the series’ shape-shifting home base to magically appear. Mickey introduces a daily theme and asks viewers at home to help in interactive problem-solving adventures. Mickey and the audience are helped by a retro-futuristic computer, called the Mousekedoer, by the helpful Mouseketools and by the transportable device called Toodles — playful gizmos and gear that reinforce the series’ early-learning concepts.

After successfully completing each adventure, the Sensational Six return to the Clubhouse, where Mickey recaps the fun activities and lessons learned with the celebratory “Hot Dog!” song.

Exec producer of MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE is Bobs Gannaway (MICKEY MOUSEWORKS, Disney’s HOUSE OF MOUSE and 101 DALMATIANS: THE SERIES). Leslie Valdes is producer and story editor with Rob LaDuca and Sherie E. Pollack directing. Music is composed by Michael Himelstein and Michael Turner. Staff story writers include Ashley Mendoza, Catherine A. Lieuwen and Jeffrey E. Borkin.

Wayne Allwine provides the voice of Mickey Mouse, Russi Taylor is Minnie Mouse, Bill Farmer does Goofy and Pluto, Tony Anselmo is Donald Duck and Tress MacNeille voices Daisy Duck and Chip & Dale. Recurring cast includes Corey Burton as Professor Von Drake, April Winchell as Clarabelle Cow, Jim Cummings is Pete the Cat, Will Ryan does Willie the Giant and Frank Welker is Figaro.

The series’ opening theme and its recurring “Hot Dog!” song are written and performed by the Grammy Award-winning rock group They Might Be Giants. “The Mousekedoer Song” is written by Michael Rubin and performed by Mickey Mouse.

Curriculum advisors are Dr. Renee Cherow O’Leary for Playhouse Disney plus Debbie Jaffee and Iris Sroka, Ph.D., hypothesis, for the series.

The “Daisy-Bo-Peep” premiere episode features Daisy Duck has lost Little Bo Peep’s sheep. Mickey hatches a plan to locate the wandering animals. While Mickey and young viewers are using their counting, shape and color recognition skills to round up Daisy’s sheep, Donald Duck and Goofy get into some comical mishaps. They employ some handy Mouseketools, and help from chipmunk “guest stars” Chip and Dale, to find all the sheep.

“Mickey and the ‘Sensational Six’ have entertained kids for generations, and we’re thrilled to introduce them to an entirely new audience of preschoolers,” said Gary Marsh, president, entertainment, Disney Channel Worldwide. “Their playful spirit appeals to the kid in all of us, and kids, parents, grandparents and caregivers alike will enjoy seeing their favorite childhood characters come to life in these new clubhouse adventures that also teach important learning skills.”

So much for the idea that Disney is the happiest place on Earth.

The family-entertainment giant stumbled badly in its latest quarter. Revenue fell by 8% to $9.6 billion during the first quarter, weighed down by sluggish television advertising, slower turnstile clicks at its theme parks, and a tough slate of DVD releases relative to last year’s winners.

Earnings fell by 35% to $0.41 a share before an investment sale gain. Analysts were expecting a profit of $0.51 a share on $10.1 billion in revenue. It’s the second quarter in a row that Disney has come up short, and that’s after blowing past Wall Street’s bottom-line targets consistently during the early part of CEO Bob Iger’s tenure.

The media titan’s strongholds proved weak, with declines in media networks (5%), parks and resorts (4%), and studio (26%). Operating margins deteriorated in all three areas. The company scored gains in consumer products as the result of its Disney Store acquisition from Children’s Place (Nasdaq: PLCE) along with a healthy 13% jump in interactive media, but those two subsidiaries make up less than 10% of the revenue.

Everyone knows that the economy is in a funk, and that means that even zealous Jonas Brothers fans are taking a breather.

Disney can’t afford to be off. It’s not like fellow park operators Cedar Fair (NYSE: FUN) and Six Flags (NYSE: SIX), which hibernate during the fall and winter and have a long-shot crack at sleeping through the malaise if the economy bounces back this summer. Disney’s wheels are always turning.

It doesn’t help that Disney is now two years removed from its most recent Pirates of the Caribbean flick. One can argue that Miley Cyrus and High School Musical have also run their course.

Getting pumped about the current quarter is tough, too. Beyond the advertising headwinds and escalating cable programming costs that also smacks around rivals such as Viacom (NYSE: VIA), CBS (NYSE: CBS), and News Corp. (NYSE: NWS), investors need to brace themselves for a dud at the theme-park level, too. Disney isn’t alone in pushing out some massive discounts, including its free birthday admission and the “buy four nights, get three nights free” promotion. The calendar is going to betray the company.

Disney suffered a $40 million shift in operating profits when Easter went from being a fiscal third-quarter event to a second-quarter holiday break. Easter falls in April this year, so the quarter that ends in March is going to have an even harder act to follow.

The family-entertainment powerhouse has weathered financial downturns over the decades. It will bounce back this time, too. For Disney’s sake, let’s just hope it happens sometime before High School Musical 27 — or when the Jonas Brothers are renamed the Jonas Grandfathers.
These days the 30-year-old skater is bringing Disney to children all over the world, including the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon, which presents “Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic” for seven shows Thursday through Sunday.

“I love it,” Alegre said. “I can’t tell you how lucky I am.”

The show combines Disney’s unforgettable stories with enthralling characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket, Stitch, Buzz Lightyear and Woody, Nemo and the Incredibles. There’ll also be moments showcased from Disney’s “Mulan” and “The Lion King.”

Alegre skates in the roles of Gaston, Belle’s prince from “Beauty and the Beast,” and Simba from “The Lion King.”

Mickey and Minnie serve as hosts for the show, which features choreography by Emmy Award-winner Sarah Kawahara, elaborate sets created by scenic designer David Potts and lighting designer LeRoy Bennett and beautiful costumes outfitted by costume designer Scott Lane. Renowned designer Bob Mackie lends his talents to a red sequined evening gown worn by Minnie Mouse.

Then there’s the incredible sing-along music Disney is known for such as “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Under the Sea” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”

“‘Disney On Ice’ is one of the biggest events to come to the Resch Center each year and is certainly one of the real crowd pleasers,” said Terry Charles of PMI Entertainment Group. “People look forward to it every February.”

Alegre strapped on his first skates at age 3. His mother, who now lives in Florida, is a skating coach.

“Since we were born, we were pretty much at the rink with her, and she was taking care of us,” said Alegre, who later competed in singles competitions in Spain before coming to the United States where he began competing in pairs.

He eventually tired of competing and has been with Disney for three years and with this particular show four or five months. He spoke to us by telephone from Ontario where the troupe was performing.

Q: You play two characters in the production. Is that a challenge?

A: It’s something I enjoy doing. … One character is a prince so it’s pretty skating — long lines and more classical style. And the other one is more acrobatic. You are doing the character of a lion. It’s different movements, all kinds of different stuff.

I enjoy both of them a lot because it’s a different challenge. One of them you can do more tricks, more acrobatic things, and the other is more beautiful, clean skating, which I enjoy, too. They’re hard numbers, so it’s good for me.

Q: On your bio, you list Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal as your role model. Why?

A: I admire him a lot. … He’s an amazing tennis player, but he’s an extremely hard worker, very strong physically and mentally, and he’s very respectful to the other players. He’s No. 1 in the world right now. He’s the best tennis player ever since Roger Federer. He’s very humble and I admire that. … He’s a great role model for anyone.

The new production, “Disney On Ice presents Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey,” aims to take audiences on a sightseeing tour of the imagination. Joining the beloved mice on their trip will be Donald Duck and Goofy, who have packed their bags for a ride into the magical worlds inhabited by friends Lilo and Stitch, who hula in Hawaii; Simba and Nala, who explore the African Pride Lands; Ariel and Sebastian, who experience an aquatic adventure in their undersea kingdom; and Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, who soar through the starry skies.

The production, which draws inspiration from Disney films including “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Peter Pan” and “Lilo & Stitch,” features an international team of award-winning figure skaters, high-energy choreography and a colorful set.
How many ways are there that Mickey Mouse can be monetized? Apparently the boffins at Disney have yet to exhaust all avenues, as evident by this new Transformer toy from Japan that features Mickey Mouse in a robotic form factor. As usual, with Mickey being the de facto leader of the pack from Disney, he will take over the role of Optimus Prime, great leader of the Autobots in the classic Transformers cartoon. On display at the Tokyo Toy Forum 2009, the Transformers Mickey Mouse will definitely cause parents to scratch their heads, wondering why can’t toy companies leave their kids alone so that they won’t have to spend so much money to keep the little ones happy. I remember when I asked for some toys during my younger days, my parents either booted me out of the home to spend the day outdoors with my imagination or throw me a paper and some color pencils. If you’re adamant on getting your hands on this toy, look out for it this February as it retails for $38.57 a pop
