At Lewis’ school science fair, pronounced by one Dr. Krunkelhorn (Laurie Metcalf), Lewis is came near by a thirteen-year-old boy named Wilbur Robinson (Wesley Singerman), who takes to be a “time cop” from the future and that a man wearing a bowler hat has stolen a time machine that Wilbur wishes to recapture. The sinister ‘Bowler Hat Guy’ (Stephen Anderson), for whom Wilbur is searching, hides behind the stage curtains in the gym where the science fair is being held and sends Doris (Ethan Sandler), a robotic hat with mechanical arms, to sabotage Lewis’ memory-scanner. As Lewis begins demonstrating the use of his machine, it explodes, throwing the science fair into chaos. Lewis runs out, leaving his machine, whereupon the Bowler Hat Guy steals the memory scanner, now repaired by Doris.

At the orphanage, Lewis goes to the roof. Wilbur comes along and tells Lewis to go back to the science fair and fix the machine. While Lewis calls Wilbur’s bluff at being a time cop, Wilbur still insists he’s from the future. Lewis agrees to fix his memory scanner, under the condition that Wilbur proves he is from the future. Wilbur then takes Lewis to a flying time machine, and uses it to take them to the year 2037, thirty years forward. Meanwhile, Goob is visited by the Bowler Hat Guy, who advises him to nurture whatever resentment he has against Lewis.

After giving Lewis a tour of the fantastical world of the future, Wilbur then intends to return Lewis to the science fair. Lewis, however, realizes he can use the time machine to go back and see his mother. Wilbur insists he go back to fix the memory scanner, and while arguing, Lewis and Wilbur crash the time machine. Wilbur asks Lewis to fix it, and Lewis agrees under the condition that Wilbur take him back to visit his mother afterward. Wilbur then takes Lewis to the garage of his house, where they are met by a golden robot named Carl (Harland Williams) who starts screaming. In order to conceal Lewis’ identity from his family, Wilbur conceals his prominent hair beneath the now famous Carmen Miranda fruit hat and hides him in the garage. However, Lewis chafes at Wilbur’s orders and leaves the garage to explore the changed world. Lewis then meets Wilbur’s grandfather, Bud (Steve Anderson). Bud takes Lewis on a tour of the house, during which Lewis meets the rest of the fun-loving and overly-eccentric Robinson family ranging from:

* Wilbur’s friendly mother Franny (Nicole Sullivan) who teaches frogs to sing and play musical instruments.
* The family’s squid-like butler Lefty (Nathan Greno).
* Bud’s wife Lucille (Laurie Metcalf), who is fond of dancing.
* Bud’s brother Uncle Fritz and his “wife”, a hand puppet called Aunt Petunia (both voiced by Ethan Sandler).
* Tallulah (Steve Anderson) and Laszlo (Ethan Sandler), who are Uncle Fritz and Aunt Petunia’s children.
* The family dog Buster who is shown wearing glasses (since his insurance won’t pay for contacts).
* Bud’s brother Uncle Joe whose always in his chair and his wife Aunt Billie (Kellie M. Hoover) who is a train fanatic.
* Twin uncles Spike and Dimitri (both voiced by Ethan Sandler) who often compete to have a visiter push their doorbell. No one knows who they are related to.
* Human cannonball Uncle Gaston (Don Hall), who is Franny’s brother.
* Intergalactic pizza delivery-man Uncle Art (Adam West), who is Franny’s brother.
